Amy Schumer recently shared how internet trolls unintentionally led her to discover she had Cushing syndrome, a condition she wouldn’t have known about otherwise. In an episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, she talked about receiving negative comments about her suddenly swollen face, which some online users referred to as a “moon face.” While she initially dismissed these comments, medical professionals chimed in, suggesting it could be Cushing syndrome, a condition caused by excess cortisol in the body, often due to long-term steroid use.
Schumer had been getting steroid injections for scars from her breast reduction and C-section, which led to her realization that this could be the cause of her symptoms. She explained how she was about to begin filming her movie Kinda Pregnant, but was feeling insecure about her appearance due to the condition. One friend bluntly told her, “Your face is looking, like, a little bit insane,” which helped her face the situation.
However, it was another friend and director, Lorraine Caffery, who gave her the confidence she needed by simply saying, “I think you look f—ing great.” Sometimes, all it takes is one person’s support to make a huge difference when you’re struggling with self-doubt.
Schumer’s experience is a powerful reminder of how online criticism can have unexpected consequences, but also how valuable a strong support network is when navigating difficult moments. It’s important to listen to your body, seek help when needed, and find people who will lift you up when you’re feeling down.
